When Hunter Thompson came to speak at the U. of Hartford, I went to see him. First I called the U. to find out if the public was allowed in - no, you had to enroll in the jounalizm course, for several hundred dollars. I couldn't do that.
So on the day he was to speak I took the bus in, wearing my Interstate Security Services shirt. I went to the building he was speaking at and waited. There were people at both entrances to the hall, checking everybody for proof of enrollment. I stood by the wall for a while, pretending to be a security guard. There was a real security guard from campus security, 3 times my size, and he kept looking at me in a disgusted way. Finally I went up to th ewoman at the door I was standing beside + pointed in - "I'm supposed to guard that door over there" I said.
"Ok, go ahead, just make sure you find the one that leads to the outside." She told me, and I went in. Fantastic! I went backstage and stood by a door. It was dark + I hid in curtains by the back room. After a while the door opened and a kid came in.
"Hello," I said. He jumped.
"Oh, you startled me! Who are you?"
"I'm guarding this door, who are you?"
"Ah, I'm ... " He reached in his wallet and pulled out a badge which identified him as a member of the campus radio station - he was setting up wires to broadcast Thompson's lecture. I nodded and allowed him to pass.
