Although most visitors to Dreams Into Lightning come for my political posts, I do indulge in creative writing at odd moments. Two short stories I've posted here at DiL are The Rose of Paradise and The Zero Ring. "The Rose of Paradise" is a somewhat fanciful (and queer-themed) retelling of the creation story from Genesis; my story obviously takes some creative liberties but is also based on a fairly close reading of the original Hebrew text. "The Zero Ring" is loosely based on Act I of King Lear.
My current project, The Queen's Courtesan, began as a two-page short story that got out of hand. It now runs to 40 chapters, about 100 pages, and almost 22,000 words - and I've still got a long way to go. I've been writing it chapter by chapter with very little planning and it is not nearly as polished as the two other stories, but I hope to use it as a springboard for future stories set in the Gilkesh universe. I've also created a homepage for the Gilkesh language.
If you want to download the story so far (pdf format), here it is:
In 2008 I'm planning to devote more time and energy to my writing. New projects will include both Gilkesh-related and non-Gilkesh fiction. There may even be a sequel to "The Zero Ring" in the works.
To those readers who've read (and hopefully enjoyed) my creative writing so far - particularly the reader or readers at Stony Brook University, New York - thank you. And please stay tuned.
